Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about live sketch artists for events?

Below are answers to the most common questions event planners ask about booking Drawing Booth for corporate events, weddings, and brand activations.

What does a live sketch artist do at an event?

A live sketch artist creates custom portraits of guests during the event itself. Drawing Booth artists move through the room sketching guests on an iPad while mingling with the crowd. Each portrait is drawn in just a few minutes and printed instantly so guests can take home a personalized keepsake.

Because the sketching happens directly on the event floor, guests can participate naturally without leaving the flow of the evening.

How does roaming sketching work at an event?

Unlike traditional caricature artists who sit at a station, Drawing Booth artists move throughout the event space. Artists often begin with a warm-up sketch early in the event so guests can see the artwork and understand how the experience works.

Once guests see the drawings being created, curiosity spreads quickly. People often approach the artist themselves to ask for a portrait.

Artists may also approach guests who seem relaxed and interested in the experience, showing a sample drawing and explaining that the portrait only takes a few minutes. When one person in a group is drawn, others often join in as well.

Because the artists roam the room, the portrait experience becomes part of the event itself rather than something guests have to wait in line for.

Do guests need to sit still?

No. Most portraits are drawn while guests stand, chat, or enjoy the event. The artist works quickly and captures the guest’s likeness in just a few minutes, allowing the experience to feel natural and spontaneous.

For full-body fashion portraits, guests often prefer to have a quick reference photo taken. This allows them to continue enjoying the event while the artist completes the drawing, rather than standing still for the entire process.

How long does a portrait take?

Most portraits take about 5–7 minutes, depending on the level of detail and color. Once the drawing is complete, a 4×6 glossy print is produced immediately using the artist’s mobile printer. Guests also receive a digital copy.

How many guests can be drawn at an event?

A single artist typically creates 8–12 portraits per hour. For larger events, multiple artists can work simultaneously to increase the number of guests who receive portraits.

Our team can help recommend the ideal number of artists based on your guest count and event timing.

What do guests receive?

Each guest receives:

  • A 4×6 glossy printed portrait created during the event
    • A digital copy of their portrait
    • A custom template or background on both print and digital files that can include branding or event design elements

These portraits often become one of the most memorable takeaways from the event.

What types of events hire live sketch artists?

Drawing Booth artists frequently work at:

  • Corporate events
    • Brand activations
    • Client appreciation events
    • Conferences and trade shows
    • Luxury weddings
    • Private celebrations

Live portrait sketching works particularly well for events where hosts want interactive entertainment and a meaningful guest takeaway.

What makes Drawing Booth different from caricature artists?

Traditional caricature artists often work at a seated station and draw exaggerated portraits.

Drawing Booth artists create fast, flattering portraits designed to capture guests in an elegant and expressive style rather than exaggeration. Our artists roam throughout the event, sketching guests while mingling with the crowd so the experience feels integrated into the event itself.

Why do you draw digitally instead of on paper?

Digital drawing allows our artists to work quickly while still producing high-quality artwork. It also allows us to print portraits instantly, share digital copies with guests, and incorporate custom branding or illustrated backgrounds into the artwork.

This approach combines the artistry of live drawing with the flexibility of modern event technology.

How many artists should I book for my event?

The number of artists depends on your guest count and the length of the event. As a general guideline, one artist typically creates about 8–12 portraits per hour, depending on the artist and the style of drawing. Portraits with more color, full-body compositions, or additional detail may take slightly longer.

While each drawing only takes a few minutes, artists also manage printing the 6 portrait and sending the digital copy, which adds a small amount of time to the overall process.

If your goal is to create portraits for a larger portion of your guests, we can recommend adding additional artists to increase capacity. Some clients also choose digital-only portraits or a seated artist setup with a line, which can increase the number of drawings completed per hour.

However, many hosts prefer the roaming sketch experience, where artists mingle throughout the event and sketch guests naturally within the flow of the room.

Our team is happy to help recommend the ideal setup based on your guest count, event timeline, and goals for the experience.

Can the portraits include branding or custom designs?

Yes. Many clients choose to include custom backgrounds, event titles, or brand elements within the portrait template. This creates a personalized keepsake that reflects the event’s theme or brand identity.

Custom illustrated backgrounds and branded templates are available for an additional design fee, depending on the complexity of the artwork. Our team can work with your event or marketing team to develop a design that complements the event experience.
